ADUs are additional separate living units on single-family lots and are commonly referred to as granny flats, mother-in-law suites, or backyard cottages. Last year alone, the City of Portland received almost six times the number of ADU permit applications than average. Currently, there are around 800 completed ADUs in Portland, with more in the pipeline. Now is the time to move forward for clients interested in these dwellings – through June 2016, the System Development Charges in the city of Portland are waived for ADU construction, a potential savings of up to $11,000.
