Mommy & Me – Io e la Mamma – Italian Playgroup for children and caregiveer – NW PDX. This program is open to all children, ages 18 to 36 months, from those who are new to the language to those who speak it in their everyday lives. Native Italian teacher, Lucia Biancalana Cantone, hosts simple crafts, songs, nursery rhymes, games, and free play. Friday 10-11am. Free!
Eight Free Days at Lan Su Chinese Garden. Much more than just a beautiful botanical garden, Lan Su is a creative wonder — a powerfully inspiring experience based on a 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition that melds art, architecture, design and nature in perfect harmony. Free admission through Saturday 1/11 with donation of non-perishable food for each entry.
Portland Boat Show at the Expo Center. Kids 12 and under can build a small boat to take home free. Grown-ups can discover the latest boat lines, technology and accessories, and a huge selection of previously owned boats, fun features like beer tasting, the huge Escapade Houseboat and more. Friday 11am-9pm, Saturday 10am-8pm, Sunday 10am-6pm. $10, free ages 0-12
Parents’ Night Out at Creative Roots. Parents enjoy an evening out, while kids stay to create and play! Kids enjoy time creating art and playing together. Many fun activities, stories, games and free time. Friday 4:30-7:30pm. $25. Preregistration required.
Preteen BFF Pop Night at Art ala Carte. Bring in your bestie for a night of art, popcorn, pop music and soda pop. (you may bring in dinner if you wish). Friendship bracelet and shrinky dink tutorials, glue gun insanity. Bring a shirt to tie dye! Parents can stay or take off for some grown up time. Ages 9-13. Happy Birthday JRR Tolkien at Kennedy School. Elves, wizards, orcs and all others are invited to join in this celebration of J.R.R. Tolkien, one the 20th century’s most influential authors. Live music from the Garcia Birthday Band, Hobbit-inspired food specials and more! Come in costume to compete for prizes. Saturday – all day. Free!
Art ala Carte PDX 2nd Birthday Party. Come and celebrate 2 years of Art ala Carte. Entertainment from Tallulahs Daddy 11am-12:30pm. Face painting from Hennatopia 10am-2pm. Safety Saturday at the Historic Belmont Firehouse. Head to the Firehouse for a monthly open day of operation. Drop in during open hours to see the exhibits and learn about safety for you and your family. No appointment is necessary. Saturday 10am-3pm. Free!
Second Saturday at the Water Center: Winter’s Night. Discover the interesting things you can see and hear during a long winter’s night. Have you ever thought about what animals might be moving around on a cold dark night? How do they move so quickly and quietly? Families are invited to come find out at the Water Resources Education Center’s Second Saturday event. Saturday 1-3pm. Free!
Full of safe and fun activities that keep your children busy, while parents enjoy a night out. Pizza, juice, and a snack are provided. New Year’s Celebration. Come celebrate the new year with us and tell us what great resolutions you’ve made! Ages 4-12. Saturday 5-9pm. $25, member discount.
Family Open Studio 100th Monkey. A special family only time in the open studio space. Work on one piece as a family or let each person follow the voice of their inner creative. Sunday 1-3pm. $20 and up.
Oregon Pacific Railroad Train Rides at Rail Heritage Center. The Oregon Pacific Railroad is offering round trip diesel locomotive powered passenger train rides to the public from the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, located near OMSI. The OPR is a full size freight railroad that runs along the Willamette River, through Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, next to the Springwater Trail.Departs the Oregon Rail Heritage Center Sunday at 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm and 4:30 pm. Rides last approximately 45 minutes. $5. Locomotive cab rides are available for an additional fee.
